Many people today, including millennials, have never lived outside of their family’s home before. But for whatever reason, whether it be school, marriage, or a new job, eventually, most people end up moving into a new home for the first time that they are entirely responsible for. That first, big move always necessitates a lot of purchases, because every new home has a great deal of housewares that it will require. Here’s a rundown of everything you will need when buying housewares for your Jacksonville home.
Kitchen
You’ll likely need to get the most housewares for your kitchen. Fortunately, most homes will come with a refrigerator, a stovetop, and an oven, but you’ll need to have a lot more than that to have a functioning kitchen. The housewares you need to have in a kitchen can be roughly divided into two categories, things that you make food with, and things that you eat food with.
- Several different sized pots
- Sharp knives
- Two mixing bowls, large and small
- Cutting board
- Strainer, ladle, spatulas etc.
- Blender
- Toaster and/or toaster oven
- Microwave
- Plates, bowls, and cups
- silverware
A kitchen should also have a trash can for food waste, and cleaning supplies, including dish detergent, a sponge, and a broom/dustpan.
Bedroom
A bedroom is relatively simple to outfit. Obviously, you need to bring your own bed in with you, and have blankets, pillows, sheets, pillowcases, and all that for the bed. You’ll need a bureau to put your clothes in, as a closet generally won’t provide enough space. You’ll also want a side table for your bed, and possibly a desk and a chair if you plan on doing any work at home.
Bathroom
All your personal supplies you’ll probably already have, toothbrushes and the like, although it might not be a bad time to replace anything that’s getting old. What you will need that will be new is cleaning supplies. A bathroom can get filthy quickly, and it’s important to stay ahead of it. Most showers won’t come with shower curtains, and if they do, they might be questionable anyway, so it’s advisable to buy your own. Make sure to always stack well stocked on soap, toilet paper, and other consumables. This is also a good place to keep a well-stocked first aid kit.
Living Room
The living room is where you will generally be relaxing and allows for some of the most personal expression in the home. Here, you can have whatever you care about most. A television is always a popular idea, as is a music player of some sort. Couches or chairs of some sort are a must, although don’t feel you have to stick to the same, low coffee table you’ve seen in other homes. If you’re a game player, you might want a taller table to gather around with friends. If you’re big into reading, a bookshelf would be a good idea.
Making sure your home is fully stocked is going to make all the difference when it comes to your comfort and lifestyle. There are a few more things that every home should have: a vacuum, a flashlight (with batteries), a fire extinguisher, and a basic tool set. Moving into your first home on your own can be daunting, but once you’ve got everything together, you’ll be amazed at how it feels to be truly independent.
